Quick Review:
Don't get the impression that Full Metal Panic is just  a mecha anime. This anime is way more story and character orientated.  Full Metal Panic has a perfect mixture of comedy, drama and action.  And it's a series which has sufficient source material and a large fanbase to sustain itself far into the future.

Story:

Full Metal Panic, not be confused with Fullmetal Alchemist, is set in an alternate world which uses real world events as a background for its history.  The cold war is still ongoing in Full Metal Panic, but conventional weaponary have grown much more formidable with the introduction of Black Technology.  The most noteable invention is the humanoid armored mechas known as Arm Slaves.  Arm Slaves have changes the face of the battlefield with their toughness, high mobility and heavy weaponary.  The people behind the Black Technology are called the Whispered.  The Whispered have knowledge to create Black Technology, but usually it remains dormant within the individual until it is triggered.  The knowledge that the Whispered hold can defy modern science and change the balance of world power.  Thus, many groups are intersted in discovering dormant Whispered, and will use any means necessary to gain their knowledge of Black Technology.

The main characters of Full Metal Panic! are Kaname Chidori and Sosuke Sagara.  Chidori is one of the mysterious Whispered, but is oblivious to this fact.  She is a healthy and athletic Japanese high school student, the only hint of her Whispered ability is the fact that she excels at math and science.  Souske is a young, but experienced member of Mithril, a paramilitary counter-terrorist force which protects the Whispered.  Recently, terrorist organization have gained knowledge of Chidori's secret, so Sosuke Sagara was sent to be Chidori's bodyguard by infiltrating her high school as a student. This is easier said than done because Souske has spent his entire life in the military or on the battlefield, so he finds it very hard to adjust to civilian life.

Souske becomes over protective of Chidori and treats simple day to day events as threats to her safety; Souske usually removes them by blowing them up.  This annoys Chidori very much because not only does Souske wreck her social life, he also tends to intervene in her private life as well.  But the bad guys of the world soon catch up with Kaname Chidori and she is forced to realize the powerful knowledge she holds inside.  Chidori realizes that if she wants to maintain her normal life, she must cooperate with Mithril.

Chidori also begans to understand Souske's behaviour and grows fond of him. Souske also develops feelings for Chidori, but his stern military training prevents him from fully expressing these emotions. This is but one of the comedic sides of Full Metal Panic.  Things become even hairier for Souske when Teletha Testarossa (Tessa) is introduced.  She is the young silver haired commander of the Mithirl submarine Tuatha de Danaan.  Tessa has fallen in love with Souske, and although part of her job is to protect Chidori, Tessa can't help but become bitter rivals with Chidori.  Balancing dangerous missions on the battlefield and a potentially more deadly love triangle, Souske Sagara is indeed entitled to Panic!
